I am sure that you have seen numbers articles titled Best Jeans for Your Body Shape/Type. I feel that this type of article is a "must have" every 6 months to a year in all Fashion, Fitness, and Women's magazines. BUT, have you heard that there are different workouts for your specific body type?
I came across this article on the Women's Health Magazine site. This was also not the first time that I have seen something like this before. I am a magazine junkie and at one time I subscribed to about 7 magazines and at least 2 of them were fitness oriented. Anyhow, basically it is saying that you may have more success if you have a workout tailored to your body shape. They also cover common tips and pitfalls of that body shape. For instance, hourglass shaped ladies, like myself, tend to gain weight all over and they usually lack all over muscle tone. Personally, I feel that this fits me perfectly. When looking at pictures of myself as I gained some weight, Amber likes to say that I just "spread", as horrible as that sounds. My weight gain was distributed pretty evenly.
On the other hand, I almost feel that working out for just your body type is very similar to spot training which is a myth in exercising. (Spot training is just focusing on one part of the body. IE.. if you want hot abs, you do sit ups all day instead of incorporating some cardio and all over toning workouts.) In my opinion, I figure that if the body shape workout covers all aspects of your body using cardio and strength training, than it may actually work. I haven't tried one yet, but I am tempted. Maybe after I finish the 30DS.
I'm a complete Pear and I always wonder how that affects the results of my workouts. E.g. I'm hippy and bootylicious so I always feel like doing squats and lunges may only give a the skinny girl next to me a lifted bum, but it's just putting more emphasis on mine! Also, Pears gain most of our weight in the stomach/thigh area (devastating) and it's incredibly hard to lose. I'd rather spread anyday! Great work on the 30DS!
ReplyDeletePears and us Hourglass chicks have a lot in common. A lot of workouts suggest doing the dreaded lunges and squats to tighten up the lower body but also doing cardio intervals to lose all over body fat.
ReplyDeleteAnd trust me... if you would like my spreading capabilities, I would gladly pass them on to you. :) lol
I'm an hourglass-y pear, or a pear-ish hourglass. LOL, I just know that I'm between those two shapes. Neither fit me perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI'm an apple. Fudge my whole life.
ReplyDeleteThough, I clicked on the article you linked to and by their descriptions I think I'm more of what they call the "athletic" build. That's actually laughable when applied to me but I like "athletic" better than "apple."
Thanks for sharing. :)

Leah: I definitely feel that way too sometimes. As I lose pounds, I feel more pearish.. but when I am heavier I am definitely more hourglass like. ideally, I want to even out to a nice hourglass shape. :)
ReplyDeleteLorraine: I am with you on that one. I love to read the articles that give more positive shape names. lol... I'd pick athletic over apple any day. But if you want to see an apple workout, check out the link below.
